Henan Population Development Report 2018 Published, Showing that Henan’s Growth Rate in Urbanization Ranks the First Place in China
On June 14, Henan Statistics Bureau released the Henan Population Development Report 2018, which shows that the total population of Henan province reached 109.06 million by the end of 2018, ranking the third place concerning the number of permanent residents and the first place in terms of growth rate in urbanization in China.
Zhengzhou has the largest permanent resident population
According to the population sampling survey of Henan province in 2018, the total population of Henan was 109.06 million by the end of 2018, with 96.05 million permanent residents, accounting for 6.9% of the total population.
Among 18 prefecture-level cities, Zhengzhou has the highest growth rate in long-term residents, with an increase of 260 thousand people over 2017, reaching 10.14 million, which has made Zhengzhou a city with the largest permanent population in Henan.
According to the report, 1.27 million people were born in Henan in 2018, 130 thousand fewer than that in 2017, with a birth rate of 11.72‰, 1.23 points lower than previous year (2017). According to the current number, structure and fertility level of women of childbearing age, the annual number of births in Henan will continue to decline for a period of time, said Henan Statistics Bureau.
Zhengzhou’s growth rate in urbanization ranks the first place in China
According to the report, there were 49.67 million permanent residents living in Henan’s urban area in 2018, with an urbanization rate of 51.71%, 1.55 percentage points higher than the number at the end of 2017. The urbanization rate ranked the first place in China.
According to Henan Statistics Bureau, Henan’s urbanization has made three big strides in the past three years: first, the ranking of urbanization rate in 2016 jumped from the 27th to 25th place in China; second, the urbanization rate of permanent residents in Henan in 2017 exceeded 50%, reaching 50.16%, realizing a splendid transformation from a province with a large agricultural population to a province with a large urbanization population; and third, the urbanization rate in 2018 ranked the first place in China.
Apart from the development speed, the development quality and connotation are also constantly improving. In 2018, Henan’s urban population using municipal unified water supply was 83.0%, and the population covered by unified non-hazardous disposal of municipal solid waste reached 91.8%.
Demographic dividend still remains
In recent years, the proportion of working-age population has decreased, while the elderly population has increased, so the aging population has grown year by year, which is the basic population structure of Henan. The total dependency ratio in Henan was 47.18% in 2018, rising for 10 consecutive years after reaching its lowest level in 2008, the report said.
Statistics show that in 2018, Henan’s permanent residents aged 15 to 64, and 65 or above, reached 67.94% and 10.61% respectively. Compared with 2017, the proportion of the population aged 15 to 64 decreased by 0.46 percentage points, while that of the elderly aged 65 and above increased by 0.42 percentage points.
This means Henan’s demographic dividend still remains. But, “It is expected that the aging population will continue to increase due to the population age structure and the decline of the newly-born population, as well as the working-age population going to work or do business outside the province,” said Henan Statistics Bureau.
It is worth noting that as a national central city, Zhengzhou’s talent attractiveness continues to increase, with 36.8% of the population flowing into Henan from other provinces, and 59.8% of the population flowing into Zhengzhou from other cities within the province.
